The main orientations of the Belgian development cooperation in Vietnam are green growth, water management, and innovation. Belgium and Vietnam have a long tradition of cooperation in the Agricultural sector. Belgium has for example been pivotal in the development of the dairy sector in Vietnam at the end of the nineties and the beginning of the 21st Century.

In the field of academic cooperation, both Flemish as well as French speaking universities have longstanding and excellent partnerships with Vietnamese counterparts. Belgium is the biggest development partner of Vietnam National University of Agriculture. The Belgian University of Liège has a structural cooperation with its Vietnamese partner to boost its academic performance and to increase the number of PhD students. A new and ambitious €12 million academic cooperation program was launched in 2017. This university cooperation has contributed to the development of the Vietnamese aquaculture, and is contributing to research on the adaptation of Vietnamese agriculture to climate change, on food technology and safe food.

Belgium’s gastronomy is a hidden gem that only those who are willing to give a closer look will discover. Featuring famed and beloved Belgian products like pears, chocolate, Speculaas biscuits, and beers, the buffet emphasizes on authenticity to fully deliver the true taste of Belgium to Vietnamese guests.

Start with Filet American – steak tartare with a Belgian spin – to ease you into the feast, before digging in the rich, creamy stew Waterzooi with North Sea fish that promises to warm your heart during these cold days. For guests with a sweet tooth, Chef Christoph will create a Dame Blanche on the spot: vanilla ice-cream with whipped cream and signature molten Belgian chocolate. Known for his culinary flair and creativity, Christoph Pouls is a multi-award winning Belgian chef with abundant professional cooking experience. He is well-versed in French and Belgian cuisine and during his travel, he has picked up other international and Asian cuisines. Always crave for travel and adventure, Chef Christoph moved to Asia and held various positions in established 5-star international hotel chains across China, Taiwan, and Singapore. His most recent position is Executive Chef at the prestigious Sofitel in Guangzhou, China.

On Friday February 2^nd 2018, Chef Christoph will also partner with KOTO Training Center to give their culinary students a fun and engaging cooking workshop on authentic Belgian cuisine using locally sourced products.

Friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Belgium and Vietnam have been developed over the last 45 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973. Last year, the partners looked back on 40 years of presence of the Belgian Development Cooperation in Vietnam. In particular, Belgium has assisted Vietnamese education through scholarship programs and knowledge exchange. So far, more than 2000 Vietnamese got a Belgian education.

From being long standing partners in development cooperation, Belgium and Vietnam have been maturing bilateral ties in different sectors. The volume of trade between the two countries hovered around USD 2.45 billion in 2016. An increasing number of Belgian companies are investing in Vietnam.
