The decision was made on June 12 following a meeting attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy PMs, and the Ministers of National Defense, Transport, Construction, Natural Resources and Environment, and the Minister-Chairman of the Government Office.
The surveys and evaluation of foreign independent consultants must be carried out objectively and accurately to ensure the effectiveness of investment and land use and should be reported to the Government by the end of this year.
According to Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung, the Ministry of National Defense is ready to hand over land for expansion of the airport.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered the Ministry of National Defense to stop building all related works, including villas and high-quality tenements around the golf course near the airport, he said.
The golf course, inaugurated in August 2015, occupied an area of 157 hectares that critics say should instead serve the expansion of the busy airport.
The Government will consider various expansion plans in the “fastest, safest, and most effective” way with the “lowest investment volume” in order to ease overload at the Tan Son Nhat airport, said Minister-Chairman Dung.
Along with expanding the airport, the Government will also accelerate the construction of the Long Thanh airport project, affirmed Mr. Dung.
