The Kremlin press agency said it is the first visit by President Tran Dai Quang, who represents the country on international arena to sign trans-national agreements.
In an interview granted to RT television, Assoc. Prof. Petr Tsvetov from the Diplomatic Academy of Russian Foreign Ministry said Russia and Vietnam established diplomatic ties in 1950, which have thrived since 2001 when President Putin visited Vietnam and signed a joint statement on strategic partnership between the two countries.
High on the visit’s agenda is economic collaboration with attention being paid to oil and gas, mechanical engineering and military technology.
Assoc. Prof. Tsvetov noted that Vietnam is significant to Russia as a launching pad to Southeast Asia. If Russia wants to strengthen its position in Southeast Asia, it should develop ties with Vietnam, he said, adding that Vietnam is the most potential country for Russia’s cooperation in ASEAN thanks to their traditional friendship since the Soviet era. According to him, the visit also affords both Presidents a chance to exchange views on global issues.
