On the sidelines of APEC Leader’s Week, the exchanging and cultural events were thoroughly organized by Viet Nam in order to warmly welcome international delegates. In an occasion sharing with the press, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism Huynh Vinh Ai - Deputy Director General of the Subcommittee on Propaganda and Culture of APEC 2017 National Committee emphasized: “APEC Leaders' Week is an important opportunity to promote unique traditional cultural values of Viet Nam. We need to leave an impression in the eyes of international friends as a friendly, active, creative nation and who is ready to integrate into the world.”

The flavor of the host

A few weeks ago, APEC Viet Nam Film Week 2017 took place at Le Do cinema in Da Nang. With the slogan "Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future", the event is an occasion to introduce the culture, lifestyle and people of APEC member economies, thereby contributing to mutual understanding and creating a foundation to expand economic cooperation. At the event, the audience had the opportunity to experience the culture of each APEC economy through 11 exemplary movies from Viet Nam, Peru, the Republic of Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia, Russia, the United States, Chile, Australia and Chinese Taipei.

On this occasion, APEC Photo Contest 2017 was also held for professional and amateur photographers from 21 APEC economies. This year, the theme for the contest in Da Nang is "Trade for All" honoring creative but realistic photos. Among 10 photographers entering the final round, three are from Viet Nam, including Tran Dinh Thuong (Phan Thiet), Truong Vinh (Ho Chi Minh City) and Kieu Anh Dung (Bac Lieu) with works depicting modern lifestyle in Viet Nam.

Cultural promotion activities at APEC have received the contribution of many agencies, organizations and individuals. Those activities include designing posters, logos, branding identity kit for APEC 2017, preparing costumes for APEC Leaders, building sculpture garden, preparing Gala Dinner or art exchange events.

The most remarkable construction is the APEC sculpture garden, which is built on the west side of the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang city. It is over 3,000m2 wide, displaying 21 artworks of 21 APEC member economies. The sculpture represent Viet Nam named "The Beginning" is made of three meters high granite monolith. Sharing his inspirational work, sculptor Le Lang Luong - a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts said that the work was inspired by the convergence of ancient trees, signifying the power of solidarity.

Vice Minister Huynh Vinh Ai said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has mobilized the participation of many famous artists for the art performance at the Gala Dinner of delegates attending the AELW, introducing the essence of Vietnamese culture and art. President Tran Dai Quang specifically directed that the reception and performance art should bear the trademark of Viet Nam, ensuring the formality, with both traditional and modern touch.

In order to serve the needs of international visitors,

Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism decided to provide 700 photo books and 4,000 travel guides for the APEC International Media Center. The Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibitions also hosted an exhibition of more than 100 photos presenting Viet Nam at the gathering place of thousands of reporters and international press agencies.

Local specialties

APEC 2017 is also an opportunity to introduce the cultural specialties of Quang Nam province in general and Da Nang city in particular.

Recently, Quang Nam has successfully organized a visit to the ancient town of Hoi An for two days (20-21 October) for the Minister/Head of delegation, Deputy/Deputy Governor of State Bank, spouses and delegates of APEC Finance Ministers Meeting. The province also coordinates activities such as the visit to the ancient town of Hoi An (11/11) for the spouses of the senior delegates of the APEC 2017, golf tournament for ABAC delegates and many more.

Quang Nam has selected Hoi An's lantern as the gift set for APEC delegates. The lantern is hand-painted by artisans of Hoi An with patterns illustrating ancient town Hoi An and the Vietnamese Ao Dai. Particularly for Spouses of Leaders from APEC economies, the gift set consists of an agarwood bracelet engraved with the words "Quang Nam-Viet Nam and APEC 2017".

Visiting Da Nang during this time, delegates and visitors are fortunate to enjoy a series of cultural and entertainment events along the Han River. While the Street Dance Festival (on Tran Hung Dao street) presents music performance with costume parade from 21 APEC member economies, the Street Music Festival (at 144 Bach Dang Street) is introducing diverse genres of music and has the presence of many famous rock bands.

Besides the showing of excerpts from Vietnamese classic drama, special ethnic music and dances at the Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater, Da Nang Fine Arts Museum also organized the 2017 Traditional Craft Village Festival. In addition, after the re-opening of Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, this is also one of the unique cultural constructions that will be introduced to international friends attending the APEC Leaders' Week 2017.

According to Huynh Van Hung, Director of Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports, recognizing the importance of the APEC Year 2017, Da Nang strives to build and organize such cultural and recreational activities to make a good impression to the leaders and guests of APEC member economies.
