This was an activity to implement the memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation in releasing and protecting aquatic resources, signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture on January 12, 2017.
Nguyen Ngoc Oai, Acting Director General of the Vietnamese ministry’s Directorate of Fisheries, said this activity aimed to reduce the degradation of aquatic resources in the Tonkin Gulf, accelerate the recovery of these resources, help increase economic benefits from fisheries and fishermen’s income, and raise public awareness of fishery resources protection.
In Vietnam, the release of fry has received attention from the fisheries sector and warm response from localities. It is an annual activity conducted nationwide, he noted.
Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yu Kangzhen said the sustainable development of the common fishing ground in the Tonkin Gulf is critically important to Vietnam and China. The two countries jointly released fish fry for the first time one year ago.
He expressed his belief that with both sides’ joint efforts, the Tokin Gulf will become a “common beautiful garden” of the countries’ fishermen, and their fisheries cooperation will be promoted, thus generating practical benefits and enhancing the two peoples’ friendship.
In 2000, the Governments of Vietnam and China inked the Agreement on the Delimitation of the Tonkin Gulf and the Agreement on Fishery Cooperation in the Tonkin Gulf, which properly delimit fishery production areas in the waters.
After the signing, the two sides set up the Vietnam-China Joint Fishery Committee, which has helped to ensure smooth fishery cooperation in the Tonkin Gulf.
